I love that she is totally weird and wonderfully wacky.
I have spoken to other people about birthday parties for their parents and they speak of small dinners with a round cake and maybe some candles.
My mom would have been so very disappointed.
So, here we are. On Saturday, my mom turned 60 years old. We threw her a "surprise" (meaning she knew everything except for a few tiny details and was not allowed to help) party at my Aunt Lynn's house and it was freaking fantastic. Cheri, Alex, and Penelope flew in from NYC and Dani flew in from LA. It was the first time we were all together since last Christmas in Houston, which I barely remember.
Lynn gets credit for the initial theme idea - and my mom HAS to have a theme. The black and white worked well with her Halloween decor (Lynn and Mike host a huge Halloween party every year) and the masks were the perfect Velita-esque touch of goofy fun.
Cheri made the invitations, which turned out cute, and we ended up with a TON of people. I suppose folks like my mom a little bit. :)
I was in charge of doing an interactive game, so I used Kahoot to make a Velita Carr trivia game that people used their cell phones to log in and participate in. It was good, but the connection went out at one point and messed up the scoring. It was a fun game, though, and mom loved it, so I still call it a win.

We also had a slideshow where we unearthed over 300 pictures of mom - without even going ot her house. We just had these on our own. Weird. A sampling:
There is not much else to say except that I love our family and friends will actually adhere to a theme when requested. There is nothing worse than throwing a masked black and white party and everyone shows up in orange. I was impressed by how game everyone was. Not everyone kept their masks on all night, but they did wear them - and they had fun with it.
Some pictures from the night of our immediate family (Cheri put over 100 on Facebook so check out people outside my immediate family there):
